Welcome back to C-Free Lifestyle! In our third installment of our health portion we're going to be talking about 5 foods to avoid to live a cancer free life and their substitutes! In our last blog we talked about 5 foods that can help prevent cancer, check it out here.
1. Processed Meats and Grilled Red Meats
Both processed meats and grilled red meats could be dangerous to your health and contain cancer causing chemicals. When you grill red meats, especially processed meats like hot dogs, it can release the carcinogen heterocyclic aromatic amines. If you grill it till it is well done it can change the chemical structure of the meat! Processed meats, such as hot dogs, some sandwich meats, salami, etc, can contain an excess in sodium nitrates and sodium nitrites in order to give the meats color and extended shelf life. These are currently being studied to their relation with cancer and warnings have been released by the World Health Organization about nitrites and nitrates.
Go ahead and stay on the grill, it's a great time, but throw on a couple of marinated chicken breasts instead. You can find our favorite grilled chicken recipe right here! Another way to avoid processed meats is to add more healthy veggies into your diet.
2. Canned Foods
Most cans and other types of water sealed food packaging are lined with BPA (bisphenol-a). BPA has been seen to change the genetic code in the brains of rats during laboratory studies.
Fresh or frozen vegetables are a great way to avoid BPA and keep your DNA safer! Usually, the fresher the food, the better it is for you.
3. Microwave Popcorn
Microwave popcorn has been at the heart of cancer debates for years. Not only is the bag lined with potentially dangerous chemicals, but the butter flavoring could contain diacetyl a chemical toxic to humans when inhaled. Diacetyl has been related to lung cancers by the CDC and can be released into the air during the cooking process.
Go natural! Fresh popped popcorn using a air-popper machine or the old fashioned way in a pot is just as good. Settle down for a movie and enjoy!
4. Refined White Sugar
Refined white sugar including high fructose corn syrup is one of the leading food causes of cancer in the world! Cancer cells love refined white sugar and it can be a key factor for their growth.
Unfortunately, as many of us have learned, its super hard to avoid processed sugar. Using all natural honey, coconut sugar, maple sugar, or unprocessed sugar varieties can limit the risk caused by sugar.
5. Soda and Carbonated Beverages
Soda is one of my favorite beverages, but moderation is key. Many sodas contain processed sugar or high fructose corn syrup which can fuel the growth of cancer cells. And if you're drinking diet soda you may still be consuming harmful chemicals such as aspartame which is toxic to human cells.
Not to sound like a broken record, but moderation is key! Another way you can quench your fizzy urges is by drinking sparkling water.
